proverbial 1

Writing about Bruegel made me think about proverbs, which are - after all - encapsulations of traditional wisdom that often draw on everyday activities like fishing for their figurative material.  I thought I'd post a few here when I found interesting ones and this one is from a 19th-century collection taken mostly from the Adagia (i.e. Adages) of the great Renaissance scholar, Erasmus. I hope to post some more, so I've called the post 'proverbial 1' in anticipation of others to come.

  1. Ah I like this. I am feeling a bit bruised by University Fashions and fads, the things that are in and out and it all turns out to be to do with golden hooks. It is obvious when you think about it that this is the problem.

  2. I am thinking of 'all the gear no idea' but this isn't quite the same!
